WESTCONNEX M4 VENT FACILITY & ROZELLE INTERCHANGE

A productive cranage solution for a deep & congested excavation

SHARE

PROJECT OVERVIEW

WestConnex is Australia’s biggest integrated transport and urban revitalisation project. A joint project by the Australian Government and NSW State Government, the 33-kilometre predominantly underground motorway scheme includes around 26 kilometres of new tunnels passing underneath Sydney’s Inner West.

Our client sought a cranage solution to speed up the removal of spoil and movement of heavy equipment during the construction of ventilation shafts on what was a deep and congested excavation site.

THE CHALLENGE

From an engineering point-of-view, this project was logistically difficult due to:

  • A deep excavation site, with limits on loads that could be applied adjacent to the excavation
  • Location – in a high-traffic zone flanked by three main arterial roads
  • Congestion – limited space and lay-down area
  • Schedule – demanding construction program
OUR SOLUTION

Marr’s solution – with the combination of high-speed, high-capacity winches and long reach – provided the ability to remove 400 per cent more spoil compared to previously available approaches.

Once excavation works were completed, Marr’s cranes supported the heavy lifting requirements associated with construction of the ventilation facility.

THE RESULT

Benefits of early engagement with Marr included:

  • Small footprint – opportunity for utilisation of additional lay-down areas on-site
  • Speed of excavation and spoil removal
  • Flexibility and versatility to be able to use cranes for the installation of plant equipment and structures during excavation works, without demobilising and remobilising cranes
  • Capability to lift heavy equipment including excavators in and out of the construction site.

LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW WE COULD ADD VALUE TO YOUR PROJECT

We work with our clients to find a craneage solution that works – no matter how big or complex the job is. If the right crane doesn’t already exist, we’ll build one to suit the needs of your project.
