FOUR POINTS BY SHERATON HOTEL

Two working cranes on top of Australia’s largest working hotel

PROJECT OVERVIEW

When Brookfield Multiplex contacted us for support on the 161 Sussex Street Redevelopment, we knew we had a challenge on our hands. They needed a craneage solution to install the 78 concrete elements weighing up to 30 tonnes that would form the foundation of the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel Sydney’s new 4,800 sqm centre. The project involved working across a busy freeway during restricted road closures – and on top of an operating hotel.

THE CHALLENGE

The project required permission for a number of costly night closures from the NSW State Government’s Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). It also required a craneage solution that would allow the maximum time during each closure to get each installation done – and without disruption to the existing hotel operations.

OUR SOLUTION

By installing two tower cranes – a M1280D and M860D – on the lift cores of the hotel’s rooftop, our solution eliminated the need for using mobile cranes to do the heavy lifting from road level.

THE RESULT

Significant productivity gains were made through eliminating the high cost and associated risks of using mobile cranes so that the concrete elements could be lifting from the beginning to the end of the road closure periods.

“There were a number of unique aspects to this crane installation. Aside from being the biggest crane we had ever used on a project, it sat on top of an existing active passenger lift core servicing the operating hotel, which to our knowledge was the first time a crane of this size had been located on an existing building in Australia,” said David Ghannoum, Regional Managing Director – NSW, Brookfield Multiplex.
